Guess what I have been doing? I love this time of year, when I can eat fresh peaches until I am sick!!
Julie is doing a Tuesday Tag thing--today is the top 10 vacations. I'll give it a try:
But in no particular order!
1. Disneyland--we were there the year it opened (1955) and went yearly from Utah for the next 10 or 15 years. My folks saved their income tax return and we drove there. Spent the first night in Vegas, then hit the desert in the EARLY morning (this was before air conditioning in cars). We stayed in Long Beach at the Venetian Square--a motel that had "suites"--2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room with a bed that went through a hole in the wall--during the day you'd push it part way in and it was a sofa, and at night you'd pull it all the way out and it was a bed. The bedroom it pushed into had a Murphy bed. We'd take my Grandma and Grandpa Smith lots of times--I remember Grandpa Smith at POP (Pacific Ocean Park) riding the rides and giggling.
2. Glacier National Park--we even have a favorite campsite--Fish Creek Campground, Loop C, Lake Side right past the boat house. That's where we learned to pick huckleberries.
3. The Caribbean--we spent our honeymoon on a cruise there. A dream trip.
4. Alaska--We had a rental car and just took off--stayed in a cabin overlooking Denali; climbed all over
Matanuska Glacier; had the best ever fish and chips at a small bar/grill in Wittier; attended the Anchorage Temple. A magical trip--we even looked into jobs in Alaska but decided it was too far from
grandkids.
5. Grand Tetons/Yellowstone--we go there at least yearly. In January we spent several days in Yellowstone--snowmobiled, cross-country skied, snowshoed. Fabulous time! And we usually spend several long weekends each summer in the Tetons doing what we love to do--camp, hike, relax.
6. Girls' Weekend--like Julie, each of these has wonderful memories. And it all started when Sarah was in High School and we'd go to Bear Lake (just me, Sarah, Liz and Em) for a few days. Rented a
Kabin at the
KOA. Then I started getting daughters-in-law, then granddaughters, and we outgrew the
Kabins.
7. Washington, DC--My favorite places were the Holocaust Museum (awe inspiring, gut-wrenching)--no one could speak above a whisper inside--seeing the evidence of how cruel we can be--and the National Archive--the actual Declaration of Independence and other documents.
8. Sarah's part of Tennessee--I had been to the Smokies, been to
Cade's Cove, years before Sarah moved there. What a beautiful place!
9. San Diego--just because I love the weather there!
10. Amish Country south of Cleveland. I love to drive the
backroads, stop at little roadside stands, buy the fresh bread, jam, baked goods, jams, drool over the handmade furniture.
I got started, and now I know I will think of a lot more of my "top" vacations--like Rocky Ridge--not a vacation a few weeks ago, but a challenge just to keep putting one foot in front of the other for almost 40 miles--and to feel the spirit that was with us along the trail.
Or Niagara Falls. Or the Grand Canyon. Or Zion Canyon.
Thanks Julie!! I can't stop!
